Real Story · Active
Jean had started wondering whether anything would help.
She had tried different approaches before. Her long-term ambition remained simple to say and much harder to achieve: stand. And walk again.

Trying before and not succeeding can change what you believe is possible.
Where things had reached
Jean is 89. Over time, and after earlier attempts to rebuild her strength and movement, she had come to rely on a wheelchair and a stand aid to get to her feet.
She had tried physiotherapy. She had tried other exercise sessions. And gradually, she had been losing motivation.
I'd tried before. I was beginning to think nothing would help.
Starting with her goal
The programme was built around Jean's long-term goal. Not around her age. Not around assumptions about what she could or couldn't do.
Around what she wanted to achieve. To stand. And to walk again.
Progression
With three sessions a week, things moved forward carefully, one stage at a time, over five months.
It began simply, with chair-based strength work.
From there, standing with the stand aid.
Then calf raises and mini squats, building the strength to hold her own weight.
Then standing with her walking frame, for the first time in years.
And then, taking independent steps with her frame.
What really changed
Physical progression matters. Standing with a frame. Taking independent steps. These are real, measurable gains.
But so does renewed belief. The determination to keep going when you have tried before and not succeeded is, in many ways, the harder part. And that returned too.
Harris James reflection
Sometimes the first thing somebody regains isn't movement.
It's belief that movement might still be possible.
That belief is where everything else begins. And it is worth protecting, at any stage, for as long as it takes.

Harris James ActiveA conversation
What would you like to believe is possible again?
Perhaps it's something you've tried before and let go of.
Perhaps it's something you've quietly stopped believing is possible. Tell us what you'd like to believe in again. We'll start there.
