Helping people continue living the lives they enjoy, in the homes and communities they love.

Real Story · Active

Richard's world had become smaller. Now it's getting bigger again.

There was a point when leaving home meant relying on a wheelchair. Today, Richard is getting outside, going for coffee, having his hair cut and rediscovering the ordinary things that make life feel normal. And he's still progressing.

Richard, who returned to walking outdoors with Harris James Active

“I never thought I'd be able to get out of my flat and enjoy life again.”

Sometimes the most important thing somebody tells you isn't what they can't do. It's what they wish they could do again.

For Richard, the conversation was never simply about exercise. It was about possibility.

Where things had reached

Richard had gradually reached the point where he relied on a wheelchair whenever he left home. Things that once happened without much thought had become much harder.

Getting outside. Managing the steps. Moving beyond the house. Doing ordinary things in the community.

His world had quietly become smaller.

What mattered

Harris James Active didn't begin with, “What exercises should Richard do?” It began with a much more important question.

What would greater confidence and movement allow Richard to do?

Because strength only matters if it changes something in life.

Something changed

After just four Harris James Active sessions, Richard walked outside. He managed the steps. And something rather significant happened afterwards.

The wheelchair moved to the garage.

But that wasn't the end of the story

Richard continued progressing. Today, he is getting out with support. Going for coffee. Getting his hair cut. Doing ordinary things again.

The kinds of things most of us barely think about until they become difficult.

Sometimes progress isn't measured in metres. It's measured in possibility.

Ordinary is actually rather extraordinary

Going for coffee isn't a clinical outcome. Neither is getting your hair cut. But that is exactly why they matter.

These are pieces of ordinary life. And when someone's world has gradually become smaller, getting those pieces back can mean considerably more than a score on an exercise assessment.

What comes next?

Richard's ambitions haven't stopped growing. He's even started talking about returning to watch cricket again.

I never thought I'd be able to get out of my flat and enjoy life again.

Harris James reflection

The goal was never walking for the sake of walking.

It was where walking might take him.

This is what Harris James means when we talk about helping people continue living life on their terms.

A conversation

What would you love to do again?

Perhaps it's something big. Perhaps it's coffee somewhere you used to go.

Perhaps it's getting back into the garden. Perhaps it's simply stepping outside without thinking twice.

Tell us what matters. We'll start there.
