Why Harris James
Most people don't want care. They want life to continue on their terms.
Harris James was built around a different question.
Not what services we want to provide, but what would help this person continue living the life they want.
That starting point shapes everything, from proactive independence support to exceptional home care and live-in care across Nottinghamshire.

The question that shaped everything
Why do so many peopleonly receive helponce independencehas already started to disappear?

Where the question came from
Different roles. Different services.Different sides of the same system.
More than twenty-five years across health and social care brought experience of supporting people directly, the NHS, residential care, home care, supported living and local authority work.
It also brought quality improvement, consultancy, operational leadership and work alongside nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychiatrists and other health and care professionals.
The same situation can look very different depending on whose perspective you start from. Supporting families through difficult decisions kept bringing the same question back into view.
And the same question kept appearing.
A different starting point
Too often, support begins with what somebody can no longer do.We wanted to begin somewhere else.
The usual starting point
What support does this person need?
A different starting point
What does this person want life to continue looking like?
With what is still possible. What matters. What somebody wants to protect. And what they might want to regain.
Designed backwards from life.
We don't start with a service and try to fit somebody into it.
We start with the person, understand what matters, and work backwards from there.
That might lead to coaching. A change at home. A little reassurance. Practical support. Home care. Live-in care. Or a combination that changes over time.
Care, and more than care
Care is part of Harris James. It just isn't the whole of Harris James.
Sometimes exceptional home care is exactly what somebody needs.
Sometimes the answer begins earlier, with confidence, strength, the home environment, planning, reassurance or simply understanding what has changed.
And sometimes the right combination of those things can help somebody remain more independent for longer.

Different perspectives. One person.
No single profession has every answer.
Harris James was deliberately designed to bring different perspectives around the same person. Not to make life more complicated. To understand it more completely.
Different perspectives help us ask better questions.
At the centre
The person.
Not every person needs every perspective. The right thinking depends on their life, priorities and circumstances.

Home care
Provides practical, personal support at home when it is genuinely needed, shaped around the life somebody wants to continue living.

The method matters
More than simply telling people to keep active.
Harris James Active Coaches complete specialist EverFit training designed around supporting independence through movement, including functional strength, balance, mobility, confidence and safe progression.
The method has been intentionally designed.

What this means for you
You shouldn't have to fit your life around support.
Support should fit around the life you want to continue living. That means understanding what matters before deciding what might help. It means recognising what you can still do, not simply recording what you can't. It means knowing when to step forward, and when to step back. And it means being prepared for the right answer to change as life changes.
More choice
More understanding
More possibility
The right support when it is needed
The thinking only matters if it changes something
What became possible?
A different measure of success
Success isn't always needing more Harris James.Sometimes success means needing less.
If somebody becomes stronger, more confident or more capable, the right response isn't to protect the service. It's to celebrate the independence.

The person behind the question
Stacey Shepherd
Owner & Director
Stacey's experience spans more than twenty-five years across health and social care. Seeing the same problem from different sides led her to ask whether support could begin earlier and more broadly.
Harris James was intentionally created around independence as the organising idea, with care as an important part of a much wider answer.
The conversation
For all the expertise behind Harris James, the starting point is remarkably simple.
